Serious about doing a PhD? Check this out 1st.
Presently the AG-FKT has these openings available:
1 EU-ITN PhD Position / Promotions Stelle
The solid-state theory division, AG-FKT, at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the Technical University of Braunschweig invites applications for a "PhD position" / "Promotions Stelle" in theoretical condensed-matter physics within the
Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN)
Within LOTHERM, coordinated by the IFW Dresden and funded by the EU´s 7th framework programme, 9 leading universities, research centres and industrial companies from 7 European states focus on the transport properties of magnetic excitations in novel materials in order to study heat conduction and thermal management. This includes a broad range of projects in the fields of materials synthesis and characterization, transport in low dimensional quantum magnets, optical steady state and time-resolved spectroscopy, as well as theoretical modeling.Low-dimensional quantum magnets for thermal management (LOTHERM) of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission Potential candidates should have an excellent university degree (master degree or diploma) in physics, good communication skills and the ability to collaborate closely with people from other disciplines in an international environment. The potential candidates should be interested in performing theoretical research in the field of spin transport and dynamics in low-dimensional magnets. In particular we seek to understand the impact of spin-lattice interactions, quantum phase transitions, and external magnetic fields, as well as the role of disorder on the heat transport using analytical many-body techniques as well as numerical simulations. Candidates interested in modern computational methods, such as eg. Quantum Monte-Carlo are particularly encouraged. A solid working experience with programming languages (C/C++) and computing environments (Linux/Unix) is expected.
Potential candidates must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research career since gaining a university diploma giving access to doctoral studies, moreover, the must NOT be nationals of the country where they seek employment, or have legally resided or have had their main activity in that country for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the starting date.
The AG-FKT aims to increase the number of women in science. Female candidates are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal qualifications, candidates with disabilities will take precedence. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applications - containing a CV, a short statement of research interest, and a list of 2-3 referees should be sent, preferably by email to Prof. Dr. Wolfram Brenig w.brenig[AT]tu-bs.de ([AT]=@) or to

In particular we seek to understand the spin- and charge dynamics of doped quantum magnets with competing interactions and complex lattice topologies. Such systems carry the promise of new and exotic phases of condensed matter and may display unconventional elementary excitations. Previous working experience ofp otential candidates with concepts and techniques of quantum many-body physics, as well as with methods of computational physics may be helpful. A working knowledge of modern programming languages (C/C++) and computing environments (Linux/Unix) is expected.
Start: April 2010 or later, subject to mutual agreement.
Duration: 2 years - with an option for a one-year extension Salary: according to TV-L 13/2 (formerly Bat IIa/2)
